This house was designed in response to an extremely demanding site. Located at the top of a sea-side cliff, the site was exposed to very strong winds and weather conditions.
Our design was based on a house wrapped around three sides of a central courtyard containing a swimming pool with the northern side left open. This provided much needed shelter from the wind while creating a sunny outdoor space around the pool.
In addition to the elements, the site was a compact site with limited vehicle access. A car turntable was a clever design feature to resolve the any access issues.
This 365sqm home boasts five bedrooms and four high –spec bathrooms. The main living areas (lounge, dining, kitchen and bar window) are positioned to maximize the amazing views the site offers. Of the five bedrooms, three have sea views, with the master bedroom being in prime position, with its ensuite bathroom showcasing a stunning freestanding bath. Floating stairs lead up to the lounge, while downstairs houses a second living space and gourmet kitchen and scullery.
Careful consideration was made in the choice of materials used, schist and cedar add strong exterior appeal, and the use of glass is prominent, which allows views from multiple locations within the house. Quality insulation ensures a warm, energy-efficient home.
This home received the Registered Master Builders – House of the year, GOLD RESERVE AWARD 2017 & GOLD AWARD 2017 for a New House over $2M in the Auckland/Northland region.
